After low-paid catering work still left her struggling to cover basic living costs, she turned to far more lucrative âtopless talkingâ using a webcam. She told Save the Student: âFans just wanted to talk but wanted an edge â" like being topless. That was it. I didnât do anything else other than talk. âBefore, when I had a âconventionalâ job, I really struggled with money â" I am great at budgeting but money just wouldnât stretch. I was living on £5 a week. To go from that to earning £50 a day or so was great, I could actually afford to eat and even save money!â 2nd-year Kieran volunteers for medical studies to cover his shortfall: I got as far as doing a trial that involved staying at a unit where an antibiotic was being trialled. I was a little ill for two weeks afterwards but there was a really good amount of aftercare. Of course I worried at first but in any other career, there are risks. I saw it as safe as the doctors dont just leave you for dead if things go wrongâ. Recent graduate Ben started playing poker online at 16, and began playing at organised live games when he went to university: âI grew up in rural North Wales so Id never been to a real casino before. The standard of play at a live poker room is far worse than online so having cut my teeth with the relatively savvy online players, I started killing it while playing live. Id say in three years playing live in Liverpool (probably two or three nights a week), I made about £6,000. While SLC statistics show average maintenance loan awards increasing over the last few years, students remain highly critical of a system they see as unfair to students in England or from middle-income families. How much students have in savings One comments: âMy parents earn above the top band so I get absolute bare minimum student finance (it doesnt even cover my rent). Just because my parents work hard and earn money doesnt mean they necessarily have enough to give me lots of help.â A third of students surveyed agree that they donât get enough financial support from their parents. Many who answered the survey also wished theyâd been taught better money management skills before starting a degree, with just a quarter able to budget â" yet only 16% would turn to their university for help when in difficulty. Of those who did, only half found it easy to get advice or cash from their course provider. Monthly student spend Tom Levin of NASMA (National Association of Student Money Advisers) comments: âThe trends demonstrate how vital the maintenance loans are in ensuring theyâre able to complete their studies successfully. I buy them McDonalds with money they give me + money for my personal delivery. Didnt cost anything to walk to McDonalds for me, nor was the extra pay too high, but I usually earned an extra few pounds per trip 6. Holding a strangers cat while she went shopping in Furniture Village. Made £20 out of it. 7. Confidence coaching (basically fake dates to help shy people) 8. Doing up a drunk friends shirt buttons: easiest £5 Ive ever made! (I did return it once they sobered up) 9. Taking some random photos at a horse show which the lady later wanted to buy off me! 10. Friend was unable to gamble due to lack of ID but still wanted to put bets on. So he gave me the money and told me his bet. His bet choices were always terrible so I took the money and risked paying out myself if the bet came in. None of his bets ever came in. Interviewing 8 ways to prepare ahead of time Interviewing? 8 ways to prepare ahead of time The following are eight ways to ensure youre at your best for that all-important interview: Practice your interview answers out loud. I recommend clients write out answers to commonly asked questions and then practice answering the questions out loud. During the interview should not be the first time youre answering the questions out loud. Its one thing to read through notes and a completely other to formulate the answers verbally. Dont dismiss the importance of both. Practice the route to the company. Double-check the closest subway stop. Know which exit it is off the highway. Dont rely on your GPS for this print out MapQuest directions as a back up. The point is know where youre going, how long its going to take, and add on 5-10 minutes buffer time. Rushing to an interview will throw you off your A-game before you even walk in the door. Why risk a poor start like that? Prepare 4-6 intelligent questions to ask the interviewer. Topics can include the company, the department or group, the position, and the process. Avoid asking about benefits, salary or anything else that shouts whats in it for me? (More on this in my next post.) Call or email to confirm the interview date and time if the appointment was made longer than one week ago. Keep the call or email short and professional. Read through your resume. Think about it you may not have read it recently. Anything on your resume is fair game for questions. Read the resume top to bottom and bottom to top youll notice different items as you scan it from a different perspective. If you havent read through your resume recently, you risk being caught off guard when an interviewer asks about something from a past position. Pack pen and paper in your briefcase or purse to jot notes and names down. There are two schools of thought on this topic. I dont typically recommend clients pull pen and paper out during the actual interview. My advice is to remain focused on the conversation, rapport, and eye contact and not jotting down what your interviewer is saying. Remember its an interview, not a college lecture! I recommend saving the notetaking for when you have a few minutes alone in the conference room or for immediately after leaving the building. Print 3-4 extra copies of your resume on bond paper for that busy interviewer who cant seem to quickly locate your resume on his or her desk. You also never know when your interview schedule may be amended and youll be asked to meet with someone who has not already received a copy of your resume. Read through the companys website and marketing materials so youll be knowledgeable about the company and its recent news releases and financial performance. Sounds obvious, but youd be surprised how many candidates dont always take the time to do this. The candidate who is knowledgeable about the company and its current events can have a definite leg up against the competition. Interviewing need not be a stressful experience. Learn The Career Path Of A Technical Sales Representative - Work It Daily Considered pursuing a career in sales? This interview will take you down the career path of a technical sales representative, including the ups and downs you can expect, what it takes to land the job, what you can expect to earn and more. This is a true career story as told to Latpro and is one of many interviews with sales professionals which among others include a product manager, a president of marketing, and everything in between. As a technical sales representative, I sold semiconductors to major accounts in the telecommunications industry. For one and a half years, I trained and sold semiconductors to one single account. Because the product and sales cycle was long, I needed patience, technical savvy and a consultative nature. As a black woman, I was more affected by being one of the few women on the team than by being black. Our office was mixed. There were three African Americans and four women in the office. However, there was only one woman in the office that held a position to mine. The other two women worked in reception and inside sales. The office was dominated by men, both black and white. I never noticed any discrimination in the office. My direct manager was a black man, who was extremely jovial. His manager was a black man, who listened well and enjoyed talking. His manager was white, and I never had much interaction with him except on occasion. My peers were mostly white men and one white women. Rather than discrimination, there was more reverence for people in certain positions. Competition among team members was also fairly high. During the initial stages of my position, I had joint responsibility with one of my teammates. Daily, we would meet with our customers to determine how the product was working with their current design or determine their expected demand for the coming product introduction. The customers asked us technical questions about the product and made requests that would make the product integrate better with their current design. Each day, our goal was to ensure that the customer selected our product solution over the competitor. This was not always easy, because frankly, we did not always have the best solution. However, we worked to change our technical specifications to develop an optimal solution. We also met with our product planners to help them plan for potential demand since the product required three months to develop from the order time. Many people that sell products think they can also sell semiconductors. While soft sales skills are required, the technical understanding of VLSI circuits and the development process can be complex and requires a technical background to understand the details of the specifications, speeds and connections. On a scale of 1 to 10, I would rank this job an 8. The perks were great and entertaining the clients was fun. However, being bombarded by a host of technical questions was somewhat challenging at times. There was also the stress of making or exceeding a quota as a team. I think that I needed more confidence in my technical ability as it related to my specific job duties. I never really considered semiconductor sales as my calling in life. I wanted to work in semiconductor sales to learn more about the semiconductor process. Then, I would transfer the skills later to obtain a Ph.D. in Biomedical engineering, as well as, an M.D. for research purposes. Semiconductors were the foundation of electrical neuron designs that mimicked biological neurons. Electrical neurons would eventually be implanted into the body. I wanted to strengthen my skills in semiconductor technology. This company had some of the best semiconductor plants and clean rooms in the industry. There was never anything particular about semiconductors that moved me when I was working. The implications of the technology were fascinating. The technology is much more advanced today. As the footprints grow smaller, one could only imagine what a semiconductor will be capable of. After college, I needed a break. I was basically a double major in addition to Pre-Med. I wanted to earn some money before going to medical school. I interviewed with several corporations for software engineering, design engineering and technical sales. I was awarded offers in all three categories, but it was tough for me to decide. Technical sales combined both sides of my personality, so I chose it instead. With sales, I did not have to be stuck in a lab or office all day long. I needed autonomy, and technical sales provided flexibility. I was young when I started working. I allowed a personal situation in my life to affect me on the job one day, although I do not think anyone noticed but me. I decided that if I were going to deal with personal situations during the work day at work, I could not allow it to affect the quality of work I produced. On the day I received unsettling news in the office, I quietly excused myself. I also learned to be prepared and then, prepare some more. In the heat of competition, some people will do anything to win a competition for the best presentation. When a career presentation is on the line, always be aware of your co-workers intentions and plans. Their actions may make you appear less than prepared or knowledgeable. In my instance, specifically, two of my co-workers decided to play some music during my presentation and reenacted a commercial or movie clip for comic relief. I was not fully aware of what they were planning to do and their full-frontal body bumps caught me off guard during my portion of the presentation. That song, âThe Night at the Roxburyâ still haunts me to this day. I switch the station whenever it comes on. School does not adequately prepare you for how a specific company does business. A student may learn software in college, and the professional version is 180 degrees different from college training. College demonstrates that you have an aptitude to learn. The experience is a strong indicator of what the person will do to succeed on the job. However, the skills are not one-to-one transferable. I got up to go to work because I had bills to pay, and because it was what I was taught to do. I did not advance far enough in my position to accomplish anything particularly noteworthy. I did, for the most part, like the people in my office. My direct manager was easy to get along with, and he was accessible. I had a stronger relationship with his manager, however, and would have liked to work with him more. In fact, most people in the office were nice, on the surface, at least. Sometimes, it is difficult to gauge someoneâs true intentions. I studied electrical and software engineering. I was most frustrated that the company was slow to adapt new ideas. The company was conservative in terms of change. However, new leadership has changed their attitudes towards new advancements. I made approximately $70,000 with a company car and other perks. I had two weeks of vacation, but never took advantage of it. For a single person, the salary was adequate, but taxes were unbelievable. After paying rent, saving for 401K, paying health insurance and paying for other job-related expenses, there still was not a whole lot left over. I also did not live a miserly life.
